Example workflow
Check devices before assignment
Start with the devices in the relevant department. Check their platform and OS version, find devices that have not checked in for a while, and review group membership before assigning a profile or app.
Practical questions
Which information helps identify a device?
Use the device name, model and available identifiers together. A friendly name alone may not be unique; a serial number can help distinguish similar devices.
Does inventory always reflect the current state?
Inventory reflects information reported by the device. Check the last contact time before acting: an offline device may still show older information.
Why do two devices show different details?
Available fields depend on the operating system, enrollment type and information the platform permits management software to collect. Missing data is not the same as a failed check.
